Some photos from our eventful last week of Grade 2.2!

This was a fruitful last full week of Grade 2. Students shared their habitat presentations, and we went on a lovely trip to Kent Ridge Park to observe nature! Due to Weebly difficulties last week, I didn't post a blog update, so this week you will see learning from the last two weeks. Grade 2.2 has been very committed to researching about animal habitats. They have done extensive reading and searching about habitats and the consequences of imbalances. Students met with partners to practice presenting and offer feedback. They will be presenting their work in the next few days. Stay tuned for videos (in the Drive folder). We have connected our study of fractions to time as well! And of course, our final Dress Down Friday was Food Day! Thank you for participating! This week our research of habitats and food webs was in full swing. Students are learning so much about the interconnectedness of the living things in the environment. We finished reading "Darcy Moon and the Deep-Fried Frogs", which taught us about what can happen when an animal dies out of its habitat! It changes the entire habitat and other animals die out too.
Students are investigating poetry and comparing it to stories. There are many similarities between the two, but also many differences! And finally, we've made a connection between division and fractions! It's also been fun to play division bingo! At assembly it was really great to listen to our talented, Mia, play her guitar. Thank you to Mia and Ayesha for sharing their learning about their unit in the Grade 3-5 assembly! And - Arwyn, Lucy and Emma are going to team up with some girls in Grade 4 in the ISS FC (Friendship Council), to help students solve problems they have with their friends! Great action this week! Another week has past and we are still moving full speed ahead with our learning. This week we started our study of habitats by singing a jazzy song! We have also started our initial exploration and research into different habitats by visiting the library! In math, we have been really working to understand division by using different strategies to show division. And in literacy, we have been exploring poetry and trying out writing haikus. Lots of fun writing about animals and silly things like tacos! This week we started our sixth and final Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet. It has been an exciting week already, as we began to dig into the differences between living and nonliving things. In math we have been making connections between multiplication and division, exploring strategies to solve problems. In Daily 5, we looked at the form of poems, exploring things like the use of adjectives, different shapes and onomatopoeia. We also tried out writing some Japanese style poems, the Haiku. Some math games and exploration of multiplication were a big part of math this week! And it was a lovely week to share learning with parents! Lots of fun was had working on Daily 5 choices, playing math games, and observing and writing about artefacts. Take a look! We were lucky share in the learning of the Grade 8 students this week. We went to an exhibit on the progression of magnets and electricity over time. It was a great connection to our unit, connecting to our thinking about how things change over time. We continued our work on learning about the past by studying artefacts. We researched Pompeii by by using different sources, looking at some photos from Ms Luttrell's trip. We also went on a trip to Fort Canning Park, where we walked along the Ancient History Trail. We saw many pieces of Singapore's history along the way! Many students found the tomb of a Sultan and the archaeological dig site the most interesting parts of the trek! In math, we have been exploring multiplication by using arrays, groupings and repeated addition. We played some games to solidify the concept. Our first in our final term of the 2016-17 school year, was full of great learning and activity! Students continue on learning more about how we learn about civilisations from past events and artefacts left behind. We began our study of Pompeii, which has been very exciting. We had a call with Ms Fort, an Earth Science Teacher in New York about an archaeological dig she did in Russia. She taught us about the bones her team found and also shared some of her knowledge about Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. In Math, we began to link gridding on maps to multiplication. We are still in the exploration phase, back some great connections have been made when using counters to make grouping arrangements. Students continued to build their independent literacy skills in Daily 5, while also beginning to dig into the art of writing good explanations. A field trip, coding with be-bots, learning about archaeologists and math games to wrap up term 3! Time for a break! |
