This week we explored our line of inquiry by creating our own images. We decided to use the theme of "Giving" as our message and chose to create our unique pieces during visual arts. We dove into the theme by reading many different books related to giving and discussed all the various ways this meant for us. UOI: Gallery WalkTo explore our three lines of inquiry; respond, evaluate, and create images, we chose to turn our classroom into a living art gallery! We displayed our original art work and invited feed back from each other as the audience. We named our space "The Giving Art Gallery of 2.2". Market Day!This week we participated in Market Day to support the entrepreneurial spirit of the grade 5 students. They culminated their UOI on How We Organize Ourselves with the central idea "Understanding Supply and Demand is essential for a Business to Succeed". We played games, got our faces painted, and bought some delicious treats. We even made donations to help a local animal shelter. We will begin our UOI on How We Organize Ourselves, with a central idea "Exchange Systems Help Our Community", once we return from winter break. It was an exciting sneak peak! Writing Our Holiday Thank You Notes! This week we wanted to show our appreciation to our family and friends by writing a note of thanks and making cards. We drafted friendly letters and finished our writing by publishing them on our handmade cards. Class Celebration! It was an exciting week filled with celebrations. We worked hard as a team to fill up our marble jar. We earn our marbles by working together and demonstrating our PYP leaner profiles as a team. It took us months, and we did it! We chose to celebrate by sharing ice-cream sundaes, fresh popcorn, and watching the Pixar animation "Wall-E". This film showed how images express meaning because of its focus on visual cues, and written dialogue based on haiku like stanzas. We Will Miss You Cesca and Flynn! This week we said goodby to Cesca and Flynn who will be returning to their home countries. We will miss them dearly and feel lucky to have gotten the chance to learn together.

This week we explored various genres of art. This included work from surreal artist Salvador Dali, as well as contemporary street art, and murals. We discussed their meaning and purpose, and talked about our connections with each piece. We also visited the National Gallery and had an up close viewing of several different pieces of artwork made by Indonesian artists. Our field trip to the National Gallery! Our visit to the National Gallery included an up-close look at several different pieces of art and print making workshop. We also got to create our own animals using touch screen computers. We then watched, as our creations came to life in a screen before us. Writing: Learning about the writing processThis week we worked hard to revise our drafts of Mr. Wuffles. We focused on how authors create suspense using transition words. It is a collaborative process, and we are taking the images from David Wiesner's illustrations to create our own meaning. Next week, we will edit and publish our class book to add to our library. Design: Creating our Own EmojisThis week we learned how to create our own signs, symbols, and emojis using google draw. We designed our own images and described the purpose and meaning of our new creations! Share Time! Each week the students are invited to bring an item from home to share. We use this time to share what is important to us, and learn to provide meaningful feedback. This week we had a photograph from a special occasion and a diamante poem! All about Parts of Speech! This week we focused on different parts of speech. We looked for examples of nouns, adjective, verbs and pronouns in our reading and writing. |
