We were so lucky to be able to use Google Expedition glasses! "I was in a cage with a shark! It was fun!" - Li. "I saw that I was floating on the sea, and I was scared." - Daniel. "I saw a shark. And a white balloon in the space. I liked it." - Ayumi "I saw a shark cage. I saw the moon and Earth. I also saw dolphins." - Allegra We continued our work learning about text features in non-fiction books. We were noticing them in books while reading, and using them in our writing. We were so excited that our Culture Exchange Box arrive from Mrs. Everette and her grade 3 class in Daphne, Alabama! Inside we found some things about American Thanksgiving!

What a week!
Congratulations to Satoshi who was the #1 student in Singapore on the Mathletics leaderboard for November 27th! As a part of our unit How the World Works, students began formulating opinions and debating about common misconceptions about Earth. Students chose which idea that want to research over the next couple of weeks. Students began gathering noticings about informational texts; looking for text features that are included in that genre. Students from America shared a little about their Thanksgiving traditions, and made turkeys out of recyclable materials. We had a great trip to the Science Center, where students began their research! This week we had a lot going on!
We were gathering ideas about what we think we already know about time. We know a lot already! We know there are 24 hours in day, you can tell time by looking at the sun, and you can tell time by using an analog or digital clock - but that's not all! We want to know a lot too! We want to know who invented time and the clock, and if there are other types of clocks we don't know about! We plan on using many ways to research what we want to know about time such as watching videos, interviewing people and maybe doing a little Googling! We also did some investigations with clocks and telling time this week! We participated in the Big Squat. It was an event on World Toilet Day to raise awareness for the billion people on Earth who do not have clean toilet facilities. We joined some middle school students and grade three for this event. We painted with water colours this week. The idea was to paint what came to mind when we thought of our central idea for How the World Works: how we live is a result of Earth's journey through space. Please see Mr. Pinchbeck's blog for the latest information about the Winter Concert, as it is approaching fast! "Mr. Gallagher came in this morning to teach us how to use the app Explain Everything on iPads. We used it to make our How-tos. First we drafted in our writing notebooks then wrote on good paper then showed how to do it on the app." - Li and Yoojin (Stayed tuned for those video clips) We had a great time making connections to what we already were learning about exchange systems at the Maritime Museum yesterday on Sentosa Island. Students noticed that there were different routes after investigating maps and made a decision that it must have been hard to travel the Silk Road whether it was on land or by sea. They also made the connection that the trades along the Silk Road were necessary for people to get what they need for their communities.
Creating Google Slides presentations for our unit How We Organise Ourselves!
Writing receipts and making change! Imagination Playground! Asking questions as we read! G5 Market Day! "On Thursday we had a Swap Shop and we swapped things. We exchanged things like used toys. We had a system for the Swap Shop like everyone had to bring something if you wanted to swap and that if something had a battery you needed extra information about it." - Ada
"When we exchanged money for things it was fun. When I was the cashier I needed to count the money, how much cents it is." - Ayumi "In the bartering survival game we had to give away something we didn't need. We tried to exchange wheat but no one wanted wheat but finally we exchanged the wheat for water. It was like when you grow up, it was real." - Allegra "We have got new laptops. They are called Chromebooks. We used to just use them and take them out and put them in but now we've got a new system for putting in and out the Chromebooks. So the first person that goes to put in the Chromebooks will put in the Chromebooks in but the people behind the person who is putting in the Chromebooks will do three steps back or more. And that system goes if we are putting in and out the Chromebooks. We should hold them in a special way. The way that we have to do it is on the Chromebooks there is a little handle, you should pull the handle up and a bit of a rough handbag handle will pop up or you will hold the Chromebook just under your armpit and have it secure with your arm and your hand on the corner." - Ronen "We had fun in Math Day. We did a lot of fun math games like the House Game we played with the hoops. First there was a tower of four hoops. And then the first two people have to go to the first hoop. So you roll two dice and you add the numbers of the dice together to make a number and the one who has the biggest number moves to the next hoop but the one with the lowest number stays. At the very top of the tower, if you lose you have to go all the way to the bottom. So the top hoop in the tower win get 20 points. The third hoop will get 15 points. The second hoop will get 10 and the first will get 5. Raffles, Newton, and Orchard got points.
We had a new Daily 5 activity. It was our last fifth activity. It's where you get a Chromebook and listen to reading on Story online. So in listening to reading you have to listen to a book two times and do a short summary on a summary sheet or in your Daily 5 notebook. It was a really short week but we really enjoyed it!" - Ronen, Aaqil October 9th marked a very special day at ISS - International Day. While every day at ISS is a celebration of our diversity and cultures, International Day was a day to share the dress, foods and customs of our cultures with the entire school community.
Our post for week 8 is a bit late due to website glitches, but here is a quick update from last week:
Student Council representatives, Ronen and Isabel had their first meeting this week and shared the vision for making our school community an even better place to be! Students started incomplete vs. complete sentences, began exploring money, and our new Unit of Inquiry central idea: Exchange systems help our community. Here's a few pictures to show what we were up to! "Sports Day was fun and it might have been some people's first time at Sports Day. We enjoyed it because we felt like real athletes. It's kind of like communicating because when other people do something you have to communicate because while you are competing you have to work as a team and have friendships and you can meet other people." - Isabel
"When we went to the Botanical Gardens where we had four activities but because of the haze we got to do three of them. It was really fun so it was mostly about communication, non-verbal communication and some fun outdoor activities." - Aaqil "The field trip was fun because the game was great. I liked going into the garden." - Jay |
