This week students continued building independence in our Daily 5 routines. They have been retelling stories and also began practicing summarising. New word work routines were also introduced. We even went out the garden to see the changes from Grade 1, and did a little reading outside! In Math, students are continuing to develop their understanding of place value and using expanded notation. We practiced this in several ways! Students had their first visit in the Design Studio with Mr. Gallagher! What fun it was to build a tower that could hold a tennis ball! There was planning, drawing a design, looking at others ideas, revisions and then building! In Unit, students created their first Google Doc to make a chart to organise their learning about communication and relationships! Their first piece of work is on their Portfolios! Words from the kids: "My favourite thing from this week was Daily 5. I love writing because you can come up with your own ideas for stories that no one else can make." - Arwyn "My favourite part of the was the work. Every single work like when we were writing the story in the beginning." - Joyce "I liked writing in my Daily 5 notebook. I wrote my own kind of stories of The Runaway King and the story of Ronaldo. I like making up my own stories." - Julian Hmmmm... seems like G2.2 likes writing!

This week has been another week full of new routines and continued practices. In Daily 5, students spent time working through the writing process on their summer memory writing. The writing process takes time but students really invested their time in their work. Students got their new word sorts started this week, spending time looking at patterns and sounds in words. Students logged into their RazKids accounts to Listen to Reading, our last piece of the Daily 5 to be introduced this year. Lucy was excited to read about animals who camouflage and Mia started gathering interesting words about monkeys in the Congo. During math, students kept exploring numbers and patterns. They played Target Number and showed many ways to show numbers like 10, 24, 50 and 99. Students also logged into their Mathletics accounts for the first time on Chromebooks, and started their assigned work. Students had some great discussions this week about communication and relationships. They carefully analysed pictures in magazines and cut out pictures that they thought showed our central idea: Communication builds relationships. They then made their own categories when sorting through the pictures, coming up with headings like: verbal, nonverbal, family, friends, school. We were all very excited about our first House event, the Fun Run, but due to haze, it will be canceled for today. This week we dove into all of our units. Students worked more with the Learner Profile attributes by complimenting each other using the profile traits. They learned that we can communicate in different ways and they were challenged to build a popsicle stick house in their groups without speaking to each other. Some groups were unsure if it was better to talk or not! In math, students were exploring patterns on number grids and playing some number guessing games using the number line. We really got into Daily 5 this week. Because students used the practices of Daily 5 last year, they easily fell back into the routines and got right into reading and writing. It's been wonderful getting to know students as readers and writers. Looking forward to another great week next week! Now some words of wisdom from the kids! "In PE we exercised. It was fun! In assembly we learned about the ECAs. We made popsicle stick houses. We made them without saying anything. When we are not talking it was harder but when we are talking we got lots of ideas. But I like more challenging." - Taiyo "I liked making I Am Unique fish and writing. The popsicle stick houses we had to be silent and try to share our ideas without talking. I was excited because I like it to be quiet but I also like to talk. In Daily 5 I like the writing piece." - Ayesha This week G2.2 spent time getting to know each other. We are lucky to have two new students, Joyce and Tanisha, join our ISS community. They have been settling in nicely with veteran students! Although this week was short, students were able to visit a few integrator classes already. Students already had two Mandarin classes, P.E., and Performing Arts. We read a few stories together and talked about how we can demonstrate the 4Be's: Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Honest. We are also practicing living the Learner Profiles attitudes and attributes in everything we do. Our units will be begin on Monday. We will be studying number and pattern in math, as well as establishing and continuing practices learned last year in our literacy programme, Daily 5. Our first Unit of Inquiry: Who We Are also begins. Our central idea is: Communication builds relationships. Our lines of inquiry and unit dates can we found on Managebac. "Find Someone Who" Exploration Time! Creating unique fish! "I tried really hard to think of a design. Then I just got some ideas from Alina's fish and ta-da!" - Mia "It's a swordfish and I made it with lots of paper. It's name is Rosie because it has a rose on its head." - Alina "We made a castle and a throne with a village." - Ayesha, Arwyn, Lucy and Emma G2.2 already sharing ideas at our first assembly! Way to go!
