Students wrapped up how We Organise Ourselves by presenting their Google Slideshows and giving each other feedback. Lots of excitement as we transitioned to some new units, Where We Are in Place and Time and mapping in Math. Students examined some artefacts that they hadn't seen before (which was really funny!). "Something that was exciting this week was that we got to read Hour of the Olympics. It was so fun. We read it so we could find the answer for our central idea." - Mia "This week something interesting was figuring out the word civilisation because it was fun figuring it out." - Ayesha "I liked solving the mystery word in the central idea. It was fun." - Tanisha

This week was a week of really wrapping up a lot of things. Students finished up their slide show for How We Organise Ourselves and will present them on Monday to the class. They also wrapped up our integrated math unit with some review of adding and subtracting (making change) strategies. We continued playing some games of chance and also determined events to be likely or unlikely. We had a nice end to the week by having a Skype call with our former classmate, Alina. And we also watched a video from Julian who moved to the UK! We started out the week with a great field trip to the Maritime Museum. "Our favourite part was when we played the drums together. We think they were things they used to trade. They came from Africa." - Lucy and Emma "I liked the trading game." - Gordon "My favourite part was going through the whole museum." - Aiden During the week we explored adding strategies when adding money values. We also had a larger Swap Shop with the other Grade 2 students and played a bartering game! Lots of practice with communication skills when trying to get the things we need.
This week was all about creating our Swap Shop system. Students brainstormed how the Swap Shop should work, really thinking about creating a fair way to trade items. After swapping, students reflected on the experience and agreed that the system worked well!
We also played some chance and probability games using coins and went to the library to learn a new reading skill (reading captions in informational books) with Mrs. Grant. Literacy Week was so exciting! "My favourite part of Literacy Week was the author visit because he taught me writing strategies I didn't know." - Mia "I liked the author visit because he was so funny and asked funny questions and made really good tips for writing." - Tanisha "I liked the author because I learned that we are never finished writing." - Ayesha "I liked when we read books in our own language." - Taiyo This week was short but students were already inquiring into our new unit - new words like exchange and systems, as well all kinds of different currencies! "A lot of money has Queen Elizabeth on it." - Arwyn "There is a water mark on Japanese money and Euros." - Emma Just wanted to take a look back to last week's Art Gallery. Lots of photos to share!
What have we been up to? Knee deep in research and art this week preparing for the Art Gallery next week! Students have been working hard on their skill sets for planning, organising and presenting information. You are in for a treat at the Art Gallery. We were also very excited to learn from Grade 6 at the Medieval Exhibition and from Grade 4 at their Human Bodies Exhibition! On the same day as our amazing trip to Playeum! The pictures Semester 2 started with the continuation of creating and analysing patterns. We moved from concrete patterns to more abstract, students creating their own number patterns. Students have really been using their planning skills as they began the research process for their artist research for How We Express Ourselves. Students had many questions they wanted to learn about artists, such as: "When we they born?" "What inspired the artist?" "Did the artist come from a family of artists?" Using those planning and organising skills, students also created stories using a comic frame. They came up with original characters such as a pigeon and donuts! The planned out the stories using their images and are now in the process of developing their ideas to engage their readers! Stay tuned for those stories! The last couple of weeks have been full of excitement! Here are some of the photos and things we have been up to as we wrapped up the first semester! "I liked the first semester. I had a lot of fun. Pyjama Day and Games Day were fun to have some free time!" - Lucy Student exploration of 3D shapes continued this week. Models and creations were build to show symmetry, edges, and vertices. Students really had to focus on counting the number of edges (toothpicks) to make a model! Integration of technology and literacy this week was evident through our work with images. Students really noted the use of universal signs and drew up their own. It was exciting to work with Mr. Gallagher to learn about creating signs in Google Drawing. Those signs will be posted in student online portfolios. Students also spent time examining images from stories, noting how much you can tell from a picture and that different stories can be created from the same image. Students shared the drafts of the stories they are writing, showing an improvement in speaking and listening presentation skills. They also gave feedback to each other, paying attention to the writing of more complex sentences using connecting words. That work will continue! |
